Return-to-office mandates are not proving effective and are a sign of clinging to the past. Time and time again, it is proven that the most effective organizations leverage the synergies of innovation and change to stay ahead of the curve and optimize current operations.

As a business leader, product owner, or innovation manager operating in a world without walls, how can you bring the known benefits of a physical office to your company? How do you create space for effective brainstorming, mentoring, and bonding opportunities that cut across all generations of your team?

Believe it or not, there is a simple and cost-effective solution that is easily accessible to companies large and small. It does requires embracing the realities of the new, improved engagement skills, and a pair of comfortable hiking shoes. It’s time to take your team outside.

First and foremost, forget the 'Old Boys Club' mentality and the golf clubs. According to the Outdoor Industry Association, more Americans are hiking. It has a low barrier to entry and a diverse population of just over 60 million. It's gender-neutral, with Gen X, Millennials, and Gen Z at the forefront of the boom.

With an income based on screens and data, I fully understand their relevance in today’s world. Just as the Encyclopedia Britannica was, technology can be invaluable to spark curiosity and support creativity.

I also feel most fortunate that I grew up during a period of time where the day did not begin with or involve a screen. Managers and mentors instilled in me the importance of “unplug to achieve”.

As a digital health consultancy and engineering team that uses design thinking to solve complex problems, our team participates in multiple working sessions each week, collaborating with various companies and clients. Staying mentally sharp is crucial as we tackle diverse challenges, from creating operational efficiencies to drug discovery or patient engagement.

Getting out in nature for that reset and clarity is of the utmost importance to our work. We instill this practice in all our team members to achieve 'Better'. Our guidance includes:

  • START SMALL: Even 30 minutes a day in nature promotes physical and mental well-being.

  • DAILY: As long as your project commitments to team members and clients are met, do what's right for your schedule. Create a daily habit to be in nature, whether that occurs at lunch, start of the day, or end of the day.

  • NEARBY: Identify several spots that you can access in 15 to 30 minutes for that daily and quick escape into nature.

  • INSPIRATION POINT: When schedule permits or problem-solving requires it, identify those regional places where you are inspired to think big.

  • NOTEPAD: Always hike with a small pad and pencil for when the answers start coming to life.

Being in nature lowers stress and anxiety, while providing inspiration and perspective. It's good for the body and it provides a great opportunity to bond with team members and clients. Most importantly, it’s a cost-effective investment in you, your company, and employees.

See you on the trails!
